The 2012 Freelander is a 4-door, 5-passenger luxury sport-utility, available in 3 trims, ranging from the S to the HSE. Both trims are equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, V6, 174-horsepower engine that achieves 17-mpg in the city and 21-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. Even though the Freelander is a bit heavy for a compact SUV, the vehicle is very stable and secure. It is a bit soft off the line and only with aggressive shifting with the manual does it perform reasonably at speed. The gauges are businesslike and readable but do have some cryptic control markings to get familiar with.
